ASSBIFI Issues Fresh Threat To Banks

LAGOS - The Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) has threatened to clamp down on banks that prevent employees from joining unions. ASSBIFI National President, Mr. Sanni Lasisi, said this at the maiden celebration of the “World Decent Work Day in Nigeria “ in Lagos.

“This is going to be our last threat. Between now and few weeks, we will begin to pounce on some companies in the banking sector,” he said.

Speaking on the event, he said the day with the theme, “Ending Poverty and Inequality, Right at Work and Solidarity,” was being held in 162 countries.

The programme, he said, was part of the public sensitisation initiatives among stakeholders.
He said the forum would drum up campaign against financial institutions that refused to allow their employees to join unions.

“Many Nigerian workplaces in private and public sectors have no iota of respect for decent work,” he said.

In his lecture, the President General, Trade Union Congress, Mr. Peter Esele, said creation of awareness and access to information was critical to getting decent work.
