Rivers Set To Empower Deep Sea Fishermen

PORT HARCOURT -The Rivers government has indicated its intention to empower indigenes of the state to go into deep sea fishing.

Mr. Kuro Briggs, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Aquaculture and Deep Sea Fishing, said that application forms for those interested in the sector were now available for collection and processing.

Briggs told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the forms were also available for cooperative fish farmers and small-scale fishermen.

He said the forms had been sent to the 23 local government areas of the state and added that more forms would be sent if the current stock was exhausted.

The special adviser said that participants in the just concluded stakeholders’ conference
on sustainable rural transformation would be integrated into the fishing sector to maximise their training at the conference.

“Government wants to ensure that their training will not just end up as a theoretical
exercise. They will get the required support from government to make their dream a reality,’’ Briggs said.

The Rivers government recently acquired five fishing trawlers to boost deep sea fishing and sent 25 youths from the state to China to study deep sea fishing.

The trainees are expected to train others on their return from China .
