Lateness Commissioners, Perm Secs locked out

BAUCHI - Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State yesterday locked out some commissioners, special advisers and permanent secretaries who came late to a retreat organised for them.

Reports say that the governor, who came to Zaranda Hotel, Bauchi, venue of the retreat, met only some of the participants in the hall.

Apparently irked by the development, the governor ordered that the doors leading to the hall should be locked, while those who reported late should be denied entry.

Yuguda said that the development aptly reflected the attitude of the public officers to their duties in their respective ministries and departments.

“Today’s experience shows that you are not serious in your offices, as you either abscond from office or come late.

“You are betraying the trust which God and the people had bestowed on you. You should go back and search your conscience,’’ he said.

The governor said that the attitude had shown that a similar retreat, earlier organised by government for the public officers, had not yielded the expected results.

Addressing the participants, the governor said that they had not been leading by example, warning that anybody who failed to add value to the system would be removed.

“Your approach to leadership is poor, as the culture and ethics of the civil service have been destroyed. You should, therefore, strive to reactivate these.

“If you cannot add value to the system, you should not be part of the system because you will be responsible for either the failure or success of the system,’’ he said.

He particularly urged the Permanent secretaries to avoid conflicts and work harmoniously with the appointed public office holders for the development of the state.

Speaking on his achievements, Yuguda stated that his administration had recorded some appreciable achievements in sectors such as education, health, human empowerment and agriculture.

He said that the government had recruited over 500 doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, while providing power generators and water to all the state’s hospitals to improve healthcare delivery.

He also said that the government had embarked on the rehabilitation of the infrastructure of its secondary and tertiary institutions.

Also speaking, Alhaji Salisu Usman, Permanent Secretary (Establishment and Service Matters), thanked the governor for organising and funding the retreat
