PORT HARCOURT - Rivers Information Commissioner, Mr. Ogbonna Nwuke, has called on the Association of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria (APCON) to join hands with government to restore the aesthetics beauty of the state capital.
Nwuke, who made the call in Port Harcourt when the leadership of the body paid him a courtesy visit, said everybody doing business in the state must key into its urban renewal policy.
He said the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in Port Harcourt was in line with the state government’s resolve to restore the almost dead garden city status of the state capital.
Nwuke expressed dismay that over the years, the city had been turned into a slum, stressing that the era when things were done disorderly had gone.
The commissioner urged the association to ensure that billboards were properly located, asking it to get in touch with appropriate authorities on such erections.
Nwuke reiterated that the demolition of illegal structures was not targeted at anybody or organisation and urged the body to partner with the state government to change the orientation of the people.
Earlier, the Chairman of APCON, Port Harcourt Chapter, Mr. Karibi George, congratulated the commissioner on his appointment,
describing him as a consummate media professional with experience in both the electronic and print media.
He said the association was willing to provide opportunities for civil servants to participate in APCON designed-training of personnel, whose duties impinged on the advertising functions in the state Ministry of Information and her parastatal agencies.
“As advert practitioners, we are in love with things that are done decently, we are ready to work in tandem with the state government to achieve its urban renewal programme,” he said.
