Niger Govt Declares 2009 As Water Year

Bida ( Niger ) - Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger has declared 2009 as the “Water Year” in the state government’s efforts to improve access to potable water to all its citizens.

Aliyu, who made the declaration in Bida during a Sallah Durbar organised by the Bida Emirate, said the project would attract private companies to the state to boost tourism.

The governor said the government had concluded arrangements to ensure the success of the plan.

He said the newly created Ward Development Committees would serve as the pivotal of the scheme, expected to ensure 100 per cent access to potable water.

“The State Assembly is expected to pass the billsetting the Ward Development Committees to give legal backing to the committees and the Speaker,Alhaji Mohammadu Alkali, has given me the assurance on the bill passage,” he said.

The governor also told the gathering that the government would embark on turning the Minna-Abuja road, Minna-Bida road and Minna-Kaduna road into dual carriageways in its efforts to make the state accessible to investors.

He said those road projects would be undertaken through the public private partnership arrangement, just other like other projects currently been executed.

On the performance of the councils, Aliyu said a meeting would hold on Oct. 11 between the Council Chairmen and Commissioners, National and State Assembly members and himself on the issue.

He said the meeting would discuss the reports of the monitoring committees set up by the state government to monitor the performance of the councils, especially the execution of capital projects.
