Tanker Drivers Suspend Plying Road

MAIDUGURI -Tankers and articulated vehicles drivers temporarily suspended plying the Maiduguri-Kano road following a disagreement between them and members of the crack team of Borno Police Command.

The trouble, which started in the afternoon, was alleged to have been caused by a driver who failed to adhere to traffic rules and regulations by parking wrongly on the highway.

It was learnt that a hot argument between the driver and members of the crack team over the alleged wrong parking led to a thorough beating of the driver.

The tanker drivers in solidarity with their member mobilised themselves and blocked both highways in and out of Maiduguri from the Bulunkutu railway crossing to the airport junction.

The protesting drivers demanded the release of their colleague, who was beaten and locked at the crack team’s office.

The trouble obstructed movement of vehicles on the Maiduguri-Kano road for more than four hours.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen the driver of the tanker, Adamu Muhammad, said the security operatives inflicted injuries on him because of the beating he received from them.

He alleged that the sum of N4,000 including his handset were collected from him before they locked him for more than an hour.

Similarly, the conductor of the tanker, Sani Hamisu, said the crack team had been threatening and intimidating them on daily basis and called on the commissioner of police to check the activities of the crack team.

Meanwhile, pedestrians and motorists interviewed condemned the unruly behaviours of the tanker drivers for taking the law into their hands and blocking the road.

The Commissioner of Police Mohammed Sambo told NAN that the issue had been resolved, adding that appropriate measure were taken to prevent future recurrence.
