Afuze Mini Stadium: Gov Osunbor Pledges Early Completion

By STEVE OMA-OFOZOR

AFUZE- Edo State Governor, Prof. Oserteimen Osunbor has pledged to ensure the completion of Afuze mini stadium in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State just as the Speaker Hon. Zakawanu Garuba has thrown his weight behind him.

The governor made the pledge through, the Youth and Sports Commissioner Hon. Brown Ebewele during the opening ceremony of the annual Ovbiomu Foundation Gold Cup. Soccer competition in Afuze, Owan East Council headquarter.

Speaking on behalf the governor, Hon. Ebewele affirmed that the state government is mindful of Afuze’s position as the “Sports headquarter of Edo State” noting that the next edition will be held in the stadium when completed.

“We have mentioned the completion of this stadium times without number. But, I want to assure you that His Excellency, Governor Osunbor who asked me to represent him here today is resolved to see that the Afuze mini stadium is completed.

“This is because of his love for sports and the belief that Afuze is the sports headquarter of Edo State. And I can assure you that by the next edition of this championship we will be playing in a completed Afuze stadium” he said.

Against this backdrop, the Speaker Hon. Zakawanu Garuba who was physically present corroborated the commissioner, saying the House will use its legislative power to ensure the completion of the mini stadium in record time.

However, the sponsor of the competition, Hon. Fred Omoigberai representing Owan East constituency in the State House of Assembly has said earlier that the competition is to discover hidden talents in football for the state and also to curb youth restiveness in the two Owan Local Government Areas ( East and West) of Edo State.

Meanwhile, in the opening match of the competition, Temple 11 FC of Afuze forced Starlet FC of Sabongida Ora to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining game.

The opening ceremony was well attended by a cream of politicians and business men which include chairman Owan East council Area Hon. Kasietu Ohiwere, Hon. Kingsley Ehigiamusor, Igueben constituency, Hon. Christopher Adesotu Ovia South West Constituency, Hon. Anslem Agbabi Akoko-Edo 1, amongst others.

Finals of the championship which comprises 18 clubs from Owan East and West will come up next Saturday 11th October 2008 in Afuze.
