Money, there is a magic in the name, it is powerful and wonderful, it can save, at the same time, it can also kill. It can be a good servant, but it is often a bad master.
Money is not bad in itself, afterall, here in Nigeria, without money you are a Mr. nobody, your words have no weight, friends and brothers desert you, but once you have money, your friends and brothers will adore you. Because money can perform so much wonders, provide so much comfort, people tend to worship it. ….so, the love of money and the lust for it has become the bane of our society.
Money, that’s the cry everywhere, people want money by hook or by crook, hence, the increase in crime in our society is caused by the craze for money. Friends kill friends just to make money, wives betray their husbands for money, some men sell their children for money and even children kill their parents just to make money.
Money, money, money that will not take you anywhere, when you die, you leave money and its values behind. The most painful part of it all is that, people who did not know the risk you took before making the money will be the ones to enjoy it, then what happens to you? Your soul may be lost in hell.
Money has turned our society upside down, people no longer say the truth, they see the wrong thing, but they say it is the right thing, just for them to retain their positions. My fellow citizens, money that is gotten from activities of such is called blood money. pastors no longer preach the truth to their congregation because they don’t want to offend anybody - especially those prominent persons in the society who are also members of their church, in order to gain favour from them, forgetting the scriptural quotation which says “you shall know the truth and the truth only shall set you free”.
Some of our holy places of prayers have become commercial or business centers, where money and not God is openly worshipped. But must this madness continue? There must be a stop to this, otherwise we are doomed forever.
Why should drug-pushers, armed robbers, fraudsters, international prostitutes and those who embezzle government funds be given prominence? They are rewarded with chieftaincy titles or made to sit on the best seats on the front row of our churches or holy places for the crime they commit against humanity. One thing I know and believe is that, people can make real money without involving themselves in dubious activities.
Therefore, fellow Nigerians, let’s come back to our senses and put a stop to the worship of money in our society. Let’s begin to question and condemn all the dubious methods of money making in our society, and let us also realize that money is not everything.
Money cannot buy happiness, it cannot buy peace of mind, it cannot buy life, the day a man dies, that is the end of it all. Thus as citizens of Nigeria, let’s return to our old values. The value of good name and the fear of God. Let honesty and faithfulness, friendship and generosity, kindness, peace and love be our watchword. These are the old values that we need in building our great nation (Nigeria).
