IBADAN-The Majority Leader, House of Representatives, Hon. Tunde Akogun, has said that for democracy to really survive in Nigeria, there must be some mark of dictatorship in decisions to be taken, that may hurt, but aggressively geared towards the utmost good of all.
Last weekend Senator Bode Olajumoke had said there was need for a benevolent dictatorship system of government in the country because she is not yet ripe for a full-blown democracy
The lawmaker, who is a retired soldier stated this at the biennial training week of the Nigerian Army Education Corps while fielding questions from journalists , stressing that Olajumoke could not have meant a call for dictatorial form of government in the real sense of it .
He maintained that democracy as it is being practised in developing countries, compared to the Western countries, really need some touch of innovation and transformation.
“There is need for transition and transformation from the traditional system of government that we have in the developing countries, get it correct and make it recognizable among the civilized world.
This is different from employing dictatorship. There may be some few policies which may smack of dictatorship. I guess what my colleague in the National Assembly is saying is that there should be decisions that should be taken which may hurt, or seem to hurt at first.
