GWAGWALADA- Prof Toyin Falola of the University of Texas, U.S. today said more than 1,000 Nigerians sought professional jobs in the U.S. because of unfavourable conditions of service in Nigeria .
Falola, a History Lecturer, said this in Abuja at the opening of a conference on arts and humanity at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja). He said the figure represented some more than 10,000 Nigerians working in varoius organisations in the U.S.
“It is sad that today poor economy coupled with bad leadership have forced many Nigerian citizens to run away for better jobs in America and Europe ,” he said.
According to him, one of the ways for Nigeria to be free from its economic problems is for it to aim at effective utilisation of its human and material resources. He said there was the need to establish an agency to coordinate the acitivities of Nigerians in the Diaspora to make them contribute more meaningfully to the nation’s development. He, however, cautioned African countries against the total adoption of the policy of globalisation without taking into consideration their effects on the development of the continent.
“Globalisation is about the imposition of power and hegemonic order on various countries, the integration of Africa into world economies and powers could weaken them.
“African countries should know that external goals have their own agenda, they should be vigilant and protect their interest,” he said. Earlier, Prof. Nuhu Yaqub, the Vice Chancellor of the university, described the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as the best global policy to fight poverty, gender inequality, infant and maternal mortalities.
