BENIN CITY –As part of its efforts to mark the World Habitat Day with the rest of the world, Edo State government under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands, Surveys and Housing, in conjunction with Edo Development Property Authority (EDPA) has organized an awareness Forum at the EDPA premises on Monday.
This year’s World Habitat Day Celebration which was tagged “Harmonious Cities” was graced by representatives from the ministry, and professionals among others.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Anthony Nosakhare Edokpayi noted that the occasion afford everyone at the state and local government levels, the opportunity to reflect on the shelter and settlement condition of the people of the state. He also added that it was an occasion to take stock of the achievements, challenges and projects in the housing sector.
He reaffirmed that the state government had plans for housing projects in the three senatorial districts adding that in recognition of the housing problems the present administration has taken steps to bring lasting solution by entering into an MOU with Union Homes, which housing project is already underway at Ughihoko.
In his welcome address, the General Manager, EDPA, Dr. Ifenna Chukwujekwu, reiterated that the event was one being celebrated globally following the resolution made by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. he stressed that housing was proof against poverty, promoters good health, provides employment and promotes economic activities.
He equally called on professionals to promote qualitative and affordable housing.
Dr. Chukwujekwu also highlighted the need to encourage the use of locally made materials for building.
This he said had a lot to offer.
Participants were later taken round the EDPA premises to inspect the prototype brick house, built with locally made materials, and other equipment and materials that were also on ground to be used for further projects.
Also present at the occasion was the Chairman of Owan West Local Government Area, Hon. Daniel Asekhame.
