BENIN CITY ––Edo State Government has again re-stated its commitment to the education of student sin tertiary institutions in the state through provision of bursary to all final year students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (AAU) and the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi to the tune of N10, 000 each to enable them cope with their academic pursuits.
Speaking at the end of session/ prize giving day/send-forth of the first set of Junior Secondary Students of the UBTH Staff School in Benin City recently, Edo State Commissioner for Higher Education, Hon. Sylvester Ewanehi disclosed that this gesture was aimed at giving quality education to the students and keep the state in the forefront in gaining admission into Nigerian universities through the JAMB.
The commissioner also stated that government had stepped up efforts to check the rampant cases of examination malpractices in schools through massive enlightenment campaign against examination malpractices.
While congratulating the graduating students the commissioner enjoined them to endeavour to put more efforts in the years ahead for better results.
Hon. Ewanehi also urged those not fortunate enough to win prizes and awards, not to despair, but to put in more effort and see the event as a challenge.
Also speaking at the occasion, the acting principal of the school, Deacon Nosa Obadiaru remarked that, the 2007/2008 session was unique in that it witnessed several landmark events in the brief history of the school.
According to him, the institution had, within the 2007/2008 academic session participated in an external examination (NECO) for the first time and achieved 100 percent success in the JSCE.
He also disclosed that within the year, the school represented Edo State in the Code of Conduct Bureau children’s forum and scaled through the first round of the National Mathematics Association of Nigeria competition in the science and mathematics categories.
According to Deacon Obadairu, some new teachers were employed during the session while a special entrance examination into the Senior Secondary School class one, was also introduced. “These measures will further uplift academic standards and ensure greater achievements for the school in future examinations and competitions,” he added.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Chief Medical Director, UBTH, Prof. E. E. Okpere, promised that, before the end of September 2008, the building occupying the dentistry students would be free for the UBTH Staff School.
The occasion witnessed presentation of prizes and gifts to deserving students.
