IGUOBAZUWA - Scholarship are to be given to the best students in Junior Secondary School Examination in Ovia South West Local Government Area. Presently 20 students of the Edo State College of Agriculture Iguoriakhi are currently being sponsored by the local government council.
Hon. Kalayolo Dimien, supervisor for information youth, sports and culture who stood in for the chairman, Hon. Monday Aighobahi disclosed this at Iguobazuwa during the celebration of World Teachers Day.
He said the welfare of teachers was paramount and that the council would do anything to uplift the standard of teachers in the area stressing, that the council has recently provided benches and chairs to schools for use by the pupils and that more benefits, chairs and tables for Headmasters and teachers’ offices will be distributed very soon.
Hon. Aighobahi said his administration had approved four classrooms block and a headmaster office for schools in riverine area to ease the accommodation problems in the area.
In a welcome address, Comrade A. J. Agho, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Ovia South West branch decried a situation where teachers go cap-in-hand for their welfare, adding that teachers are not being recognized in the scheme of things. He stressed that teachers’ welfare was the key to improvement of students and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS).
He frowned at the situation where two teachers, including the headmaster teach 10 to 12 subjects in a school and wonder how they could cope up, and called on the Local Government Council and education authority to deploy some of their qualified teachers to junior secondary schools in the area.
Speaking also, the chairman of the occasion and retired principal, Mr. Idiaghe commended the efforts of teachers towards grooming the Nigerian child and called on government at all levels to support teachers to ensure that their reward are on earth.
