BENIN CITY ––Edo State Governor, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor yesterday in Benin City declared open the 2008 Federal High Court Judges’ Conference with emphasis on the imperative to have a strong and effective justice administration system that guarantees adequate justice delivery to the people.
Prof. Osunbor observed that the Federal High Court was a vital component of this system in the country.
According to the governor, democracy is a veritable vehicle for national development and the engine that moves the vehicle is the judicial system.
He called for collective effort in the task of strengthening the judiciary and the justice delivery system to ensure that the arm of government does not fail.
Prof. Osunbor, who enumerated the provision of laptop computers, 26 jeeps as official vehicles for judges and burglary proof for all the court office as among several of the measures to improve the judiciary embarked upon by his administration, expressed confidence that the conference would offer a unique opportunity to advance the justice delivery system in Nigeria and wished the judges happy deliberations and a successful conference.
Earlier, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice Abdullahi Mustapha, who gave a brief history of the Federal High Court, said there were so many topics for discussion during the conference which are primarily aimed towards bringing about quick and efficient dispensation of justice, including the Draft Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules prepared by a committee made up entirely of the Honourable judges of the court.
He thanked the governor for declaring the conference open and expressed gratitude to the judges, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, members of the outer Bar and journalists for witnessing the opening ceremony.
Present at the occasion was the Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Omoruyi Omonuwa (SAN).
