BENIN CITY – It was celebration time for Nigerian teachers on Monday, as they marked their day throughout the nation with pomp and pageantry.
Here In Edo State, teachers in the public school system were enjoined to rededicate themselves to duty, shun absenteeism and embrace hardwork in order to move the nation’s education system forward
The admonition was given by the Honorable Commissioner for Basic Education, Barrister Uyi Ogbemudia, while delivering a good-will message at the National Teachers Day Celebrations, organized by the Edo State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), at the Teachers House in Benin City.
She commended the State Governor, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, for giving priority attention to issues that affect the welfare and well being of teachers in the State and noted that a critical analysis of teachers condition today in Edo State, showed that deliberate effort had been made by the Osunbor-led Administration to restore the lost glory of the teaching profession.
The Commissioner stated that visible welfare packages had been put in place in addition to regular and prompt payment of salaries and allowances, as well as promotions as and when due. She affirmed that Governor Osunbor was working assiduously to provide conducive working environment for teaching and learning throughout the State.
This development, the Commissioner declared, had enhanced the harmonious working relationship between the government and teachers in Edo State.
Barrister Uyi Ogbemudia opined that teachers were central to any effective education delivery and as such, should consider their roles as very crucial to national development.
She congratulated the teachers for their struggles and wished them greater productivity in the years ahead.
The theme of this year’s celebrations was “Teachers Matters”. The occasion was graced by dignitaries from all walks of life, including the Commissioner for Higher Education, Hon. Sylvester Ewanehi, who represented Governor Oserheimen Osunbor.
