THE NIGERIAN OBSERVER EDITORIAL

Good Luck, Samuel Peter

NIGERIA’S Samuel Peter takes on Ukraine’s Vitali Klitschko in a World Boxing Council (WBC) title fight this weekend. Already, the Ukrainian seems to be enjoying partial advantage following the publicity he receives from the world press. He has also engaged the services of a sparing partner who he claims has the speed and style of Samuel Peter in his bid to have an easy ride in the roped square. Towards this end, the Ukrainian government is said to have given Vitali both emotional and financial support to run Samuel Peter rag when they meet on Friday night.

NOTHING is heard from the Nigerian government through those who run boxing in the country. For now, Samuel Peter is on his own, combining both training and public relations together to build self confidence.

YET, it was this same man that brought boxing honours to Nigeria early last year when he boxed to lime-light. This singular feat brought the paid fighter face-to-face with President Umaru Yar’Adua and the Akwa-Ibom State Government.

NOW the man needs the support of all Nigerians to make his WBC dream become a reality. It is now everybody is thinking Peter should be left alone to carry his cross as he alone would have access to his purse at the end of it all.

THE NIGERIAN OBSERVER believes that Samuel Peter needs the support of all to tame the loquacious Ukrainian boxer. The nation should pray for Samuel Peter if it cannot give the pugilist all he needs to prepare for the title fight.

BOXING, football and athletics remain the only hope of Nigeria for international fame. Unfortunately some of our hot legs have since defected to other countries where they get reward for their performances. Peter has refused to join those who shoot to fame and desert their fatherland. He has remained committed to his fatherland.

WHICH explains why Nigerians must mobilize and support the boxer who fled his fatherland early this year over alleged gun attack on him.

A TIME has come for government to associate with those bringing sports glories to Nigeria. Maiyegun suffered untold hardship after representing Nigeria in the Olympics. Isaac Ikhuoria equally suffered and is still suffering after doing the nation proud in his days. Needless to mention the likes of Obisia Nwankpa, Davidson Andeh, Charles Nwokolo, Jeremiah Okorodudu and a legion of others who fought for the nation with every ounce of their fighting spirit in search of sporting honours.

THEREFORE, everything possible should be done to ensure Samuel Peter wins this weekend WBC honour to add to the collection of honours won for the country in in the past.

OUR representatives to any sporting meet should be well encouraged so that they can bring out the best in them.

SPORTS is politics. Any country that is doing well in sports, is highly respected. The USA, Britain, Germany, Korea, China and others are where they are today because they have also taken sports seriously Nigeria could be greater if her sportsmen and women are encouraged to do exploits. The nation is richly blessed in terms of talents. We should not allow such talents to waste. Which is why Nigeria must throw her weight behind Samuel Peter as he goes for another world honour this weekend.
GOOD luck, Samuel Peter.
