SPEAKER, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Zakawanu Garuba has expressed his commitment to sports development at the grassroots for the purpose of discovering hidden talents.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 10th edition of the Speaker’s Unity gold Cup competition at Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state Rt. Hon. Garuba observed that the aim of the event is to discover talents spread across the 18 local government areas of the state with a view to exposing them to greater opportunities in the world of football.
Declaring the tournament open, the Speaker who was represented by Hon. Bright Omokhodion, chairman of the House Standing Committee on Information, Sports and Youth Development expressed his assurance towards the sustenance of the annual event.
Hon. Omokhodion who was flanked by Hon. Sunday Ebosele Ereghan took the kick-off to signal the commencement of the football fiesta.
Welcoming guests earlier, the chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Hon. Ganiyu Audu represented by his Vice, Hon. Jimoh Omogbai, commended the cup donor, Rt. Garuba for his leadership qualities and his contribution towards repositioning the state in all spheres of human endeavour.
He also assured participants of adequate care throughout their stay in Auchi.
This year’s Unity Gold Cup tournament for the Under 16, organized by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria Edo State chapter, has 15 local governments male, and 10 female teams participating.
