BENIN CITY – The Supervising Commissioner for the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Dr. Wilson Imongan has reiterated the commitment of the Edo State government towards the provision of potable water across the three senatorial districts in the state.
Dr. Imongan gave the assurance in Benin City on Friday shortly after undertaking a familiarisation tour of water supply schemes.
He remarked that the provisions of water and electricity remained one of the cardinal programmes of the Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor – led administrtion.
Dr. Imongan pointed out that the state government has embarked on the re-engineering of the water supplying schemes in Benin City, Auchi and Ekpoma, adding that efforts were being made to mobilise contractors back to sites.
Among the facilities inspected were the Upper Sakponba Water Scheme, Ikpoba River Dam and Ezoti Water Scheme.
At the Uppper Sakponba Water Schem, the commissioner was briefed by the General Manager, Edo State Urban Water Board, Engineer Monday Umane on the level and quality of work completed so far.
Engineer Umane noted that the Upper Sakponba Water Scheme had been designed to serve water consumers in Upper Sakponba and environs, adding that the project included pumping and distribution of water.
At the Ikpoba River Dam, the commissioner was conducted round the facilities where both Engineer Umane and the Resident Engineer at the Dam, Engr. William Ehigie explained the processes of pumping, treatment and distribution of water to the various reservoirs in Benin City.
Engineer Umane also informed the commissioner that the state government was subsidising about 85 per cent of the cost of water supply to consumers, and expressed the hope that more potable water will flow regularly into homes by the time the Benin City Urban Water Scheme comes fully on stream.
Other top officials of the Board present during the tour included the HOD, Administration, Mr. T.O. Agbontean and the GRA District Manager, Mr. Sunday Imarhiagbe.
