BENIN CITY- A student of Edo State College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi, in Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state has reportedly drowned in a river near the institution’s main campus.
The sad incident which sources disclosed caused uncontrollable flow of tears from faces of his colleagues, The NIGERIAN OBSERVER learnt, brought sadness to the entire host community as the victim was described by many as sociable.
The victim identified simply as Osamuyi Nosakhare, 22 an OND student in Agricultural technology department, The NIGERIAN OBSERVER reliably scooped, was among the students of the college who could not graduate along with their colleagues last academic session owing to the carry over in some of the registered courses.
The sad event occurred at 12 noon that fateful Saturday, August 9, 2008 when the deceased, in company of his girl-friend and two others, went to Ose River, said to be a few metres away from their private hostel in farm settlement area of the community, apparently to take a cool bath.
It was further gathered that tragedy struck when on arrival at the river, the four-member team engaged in a swimming competition, an exercise, sources revealed took Osamuyi Nosakhare into a deep area of the river.
Though it could not be ascertained whether the victim was a good swimmer, but sources disclosed that at the end of the first round of the competition, the victim was discovered to have disappeared, a development which prompted others to seek the assistance of local divers in the area.
The local divers, who sources disclosed, stormed the river and immediately conducted a thorough search, eventually brought out the lifeless body of Osamuyi Nosakhare.
Other members of the team, it was gathered were allegedly taken to Iguobazuwa Police Station possibly for explanation.
However, efforts to get comments from the Public Relations Officer (PRO), of Edo State Police Command proved abortive as he was said to be out for official assignment.
