Police arrest 4 armed robbery suspects

BENIN CITY – Barely a week after parading 22 suspected criminals nabbed in Edo State, the police in Benin City yesterday arrested four armed robbery suspects including a young man pummeled almost beyond recognition by a vigilante group which reportedly aided his arrest.


The suspect who on his arrest was administered jungle justice by his captors, The NIGERIAN OBSERVER gathered, attempted to rob a lady somewhere along Sapele road, in the state capital when the brave men swooped on him.


When The NIGERIAN OBSERVER visited the state police command headquarters, Benin City yesterday, the four suspects were seen in the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit (SARS) of the Command, just as three of them were in a pool of their own blood.


Attempts to obtain comments from the pummeled suspect failed as he was still unconscious, apparently due to his mangled face and body.


Although, cut-to-size locally made barred gun was allegedly recovered from the suspect, The NIGERIAN OBSERVER scooped he was overwhelmed by the vigilante group which sources disclosed, braved ed up and attacked him with cutlasses.


Speaking with the other suspects who identified themselves as Elesha Atahine, Akalere Desmond and Emeka Okereke , they admitted committing the crime, claiming that poverty pushed them into robbery.


Commenting on the arrest, the Command spokesman, ASP Peter Ogboi commended members of the public for taking security seriously.


He, however, stated that the suspects would be charged to court after the police would have concluded their investigations.
