BENIN CITY - The Chairman of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, (CNPP), Edo State, Chief Ogie Ogedegbe, has expressed concern over the inability of the Federal Government, to successfully resettle those displaced from Bakassi, arising from the judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ruled in favour of Cameroon on the disputed Island.
He queried the rationale behind the hasty handover of the Island to Cameroun by the Federal Government, when there were still a lot of issues such as housing and accommodation, among others that were yet to be addressed, stressing that the attitude of government towards the inhabitants of Bakassi, left much to be desired.
Chief Ogedegbe who is also the chairman of MDJ Party in Edo State, during a recent chat with The NIGERIAN OBSERVER on the issue, noted that though it was good to be a law abiding country; however government (federal) ought to have put appropriate measures in place to address the needs of the people in their new settlement before implementing the judgment of ICJ.
While describing the handover of Bakassi to Cameroun as painful, taking into consideration the pathetic plight of the inhabitants of the Island who opted to return to Nigeria, the CNPP Chairman, appealed to the federal government to take urgent steps with a view to providing the needs of the displaced persons, to give them a sense of belonging.
