Coy Establishes 40 Demonstration Farms

FUNTUA (KATSINA STATE)-The West African Cotton Company Ltd (WACOT) has said today that it had established 40 demonstration farms in Katsina State.

Mr. Dnyandeo Rahane, WACOT’s agricultural officer in charge and of extension services, told newsmen in Funtua,, that the farms would be used to train rural farmers in modern farming techniques.
Rahane said that the farms were located at Malumfashi, Faskari, Funtua and Basari local governments.

He said that the company has so far distributed 15,000 bags of improved cotton seed to over 500 rural farmers this year, and that activities were being monitored in the demonstration farms.

He explained that the company also planned to promote science-based agricultural practice among farmers.

“The programme is set to achieve increased production through providing adequate information on best practices,” Rahane said.

He said that the first phase of the programme would focus on cotton farming, adding that the company’s specialists would assist farmers on a variety of other crops, with a view to improving harvest.

The extension officer said that the company had conducted similar activities in Zamfara, Gombe and Adamawa states.

He said that over 600,000 bags of cotton seed was distributed to farmers at the inception of the programme.

He said the programme would be extended to cover the 34 local governments of the state.
