Police PCRC Trains 208 Vigilantes

GWAGWALADA(FCT) - Gwagwalada Police Area Command Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has trained 208 vigilantes on new security operation techniques in the area.

Addressing the trainees during the passing out ceremony in Paiko, Gwagwalada, FCT Police Commissioner Haruna John said the training was to expose vigilance groups to new techniques of assisting the Police.

The Commissioner, represented by the Area Commander, ACP Victor Ojo, said the training was a recognition of the role of community policing in security operations.

“The essence of empowering vigilantes is to allow communities to participate in the security of their environments,” he said.

John noted that crimes were committed in communities and people were the first witnesses, hence prevention should come from them.

“If animal communities could organise security for themselves , why not human beings?,” he asked.
The commissioner described the training as the first of its kind in the country and urged other commands to emulate it.

The Divisional Police Officer Gwagwalada, Mr. Suleiman Abutu, said the training featured basic elements of crime prevention, information techniques and community relations.

“ We also taught them specific roles in dealing with cases and arrests,” Abutu said.

The Committee Chairman, Dr John Ardey, said training of the second batch would soon commence and appealed for operation vehicles from the FCT.

The Chairman, Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Zakari Angulu, described the training as crucial to security and pledged to assist the committee with logistics.
