LAGOS- The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Ikeja has said that its new security measure has reduced smuggling activities within the unit.
The Command’s spokesman, Mr Andy Nwobodo, who disclosed this to newsmen recently in Lagos said that the number of seizures by the unit had reduced by about 33 per cent.
Nwobodo said that a total of 317 seizures were recorded by the unit in the second half of this year as against 473 seizures recorded in the first quarter.
According to him, the unit’s total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seizures stood at N333.98 million in contrast to N341.56 million recorded in the first quarter of this year.
The Comptroller of the unit, Mr Rasheed Taiwo, had warned smugglers hiding under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) to bring in contraband goods to desist from it.
The comptroller said that contraband goods brought into the country under the scheme would be seized because such act was against the ETLS protocol. (NAN)
