UYO -The dilapidated residence and tombstone of the late Mary Slessor, a Scot missionary, are to be re-constructed and developed into tourism site by the Akwa Ibom State Government.
The property is located at Use Ikot Oku in Ibiono Ibom Local Government, the
Culture and Tourism Commissioner, Mrs. Valerie Ebe said during her tour of potential tourism sites.
She therefore directed the Ibiono Ibom Council to relocate one of Mary Slessor’s artifacts, a “monumental safe” in the area to the newly completed Ibibio Union Museum in Uyo, the state capital.
Ebe said that the tombstone and statue of late General Philip Effiong of the ‘Biafra’ fame, located at Oko Ita, the Ibiono Ibom Council headquarters, were up for re-designing as a tourist attraction.
She stated that these would be formally tabled before the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.
Obong Godwin Ekpo, the Ibiono Ibom Council Chairman thanked the commissioner for
identifying the potential tourism sites.
