Agency Alerts Kaduna Residents Of Impending Flood

KADUNA - The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) today alerted residents of the city of an impending flood and advised them to be on the alert.

Malam Aliyu Dawobe, SEMA’s Public Relations Officer, (PRO) issued the alert in an interview with newsmen in Kaduna.

“We (SEMA) strongly call on people of the state residing along the shores of River Kaduna and other rivers and streams to relocate to avoid this looming catastrophe,’’ he said.

He said that the agency was alarmed by a recent report released by NIMET of heavy rains between August and October.

“This prediction had been confirmed considering the increasing amount and frequency of rainfall pattern so far.

“Within a few weeks, we have seen the water level of River Kaduna rising alarmingly and this called for urgent action,” Dawobe added.

He also urged residents of the city to clear drams around their homes and offices to allow for free flow of water to avoid flooding.

He recalled that over 300 families were displaced by flood last year across the state and lamented the enormous resources spent on flood disaster management.

The spokesman said the worst case was recorded on Kigo road “where several homes and property were destroyed by the flood”.

He said that government had spent “millions of Naira that could have been used in providing other essential services to the people.

SEMA, Dawobe said, rated flood as the second most dangerous disaster after fire and stressed the need for preventive measures to halt the impending disaster.
