CRL Committee Appeals To Oba Of Benin

By MONDAY OISE

BENIN CITY- The Sensitizsation and Advocacy sub- committee of the Child Rights Law (CRL) implementation committee has appealed to the Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa to assist it in propagating the Child Right Law through his enigie and chiefs, on the need to obey the law presently in force.

The leader of the committee, Mrs. Kate Okwechime made this appeal when she led other members of the committee on a courtesy visit to the Oba in his palace yesterday.

She said the main objective of the Advocacy sub-committee was to promote, sustain and fully implement the United Nations convention on the rights of the child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the child which had been domesticated into Child Right Law in Nigeria, particularly in Edo State.

Mrs. Okwechime further said the sub-committee on sensitisation and advocacy was to create awareness, promote changes in policy, attitudes, actions, create commitment and participation, encourage others to support a cause, influence reform as well as promote empowerment.

She, however, informed the Oba that the Child Rights Bill was signed into law by the President in 2003 to ensure the implementation and realisation of various treaties on the child especially as it concerned their proprietary Rights.

She said the Edo State House of Assembly passed the Child Rights Bill which was assented to by the Governor of Edo State, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor on October 8, 2007.

Responding, the Omo N’Oba lauded the setting up of the committee, but however, called for the proper enforcement of the law to help check the basic principles of the Child Rights Law.

While condemning the increasing cases of abandoned babies, abortion and rape of teenagers, the Oba called on parents to discipline their children.

He, however, assured the committee that copies of the Child Rights Law would be distributed to the Enigie in the state and urged all well meaning Nigerians to support their cause.
