Poor Tools Impede union’s Performance

UYO - The Nigerian Union of Civil Service Secretarial and Stenographic Workers, Akwa Ibom council, has complained of a lack of modern working tools.

Mr. John Otu, the acting Chairman, made the complain in Uyo at the 21st Zonal Conference of the union for nine states in the Eastern part of the country.

Otu said the majority of union members still worked with manual typewriters, even after they had acquired computer skills and the relevant certificates.

He added that where computers were available, constant power failure constituted another impediment to the performance of members .

He called on the state government to take urgent steps to address the problem to enhance effective performance.

Earlier, the Union’s National President, Mr. Monday Essien, thanked the governor for setting up labour relations committee, to ensure prompt payment of worker’s salaries.

He also acknowledged the training programmes put in place to improve the workforce, especially the training of secretaries.

Essien stressed the need for members who had improved their educational qualifications to be promoted in line with civil service rules.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Civil Service, Mr. Linus Etete, on the occasion lauded the leadership of the union for organising the conference in the state.

Etete promised that government would improve the welfare of workers in line with the policy of Gov. Godswill Akpabio’s administration.
