CALABAR - The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye, says the creation of a Logistics Command won’t undermine the Naval system.
The CNS said this on at the weekend in an interview with newsmen in Calabar, Cross River State.
“The establishment of the new command has helped in plugging leakages and reducing wastage in our procurement of materials,” he said.
He said the command became necessary when certain recurring irregularities were discovered in the supply unit of the navy and the stores.
‘’ We discovered that before now, we would order for parts to maintain a ship and unknown to us, parts were always available in the stores.
“ We were therefore constrained to have this command to enable us coordinate our procurement and stores centrally and properly.
‘’ We did not create the Logistics Command to undermine any of our existing structures, it was to improve our administrative system and enhance our operations.
“ The results of the command have been fantastic,’’ he said.
On housing for Naval personnel, Adekeye said eight new barracks had been earmarked for construction.
The naval golf course in Lagos, he said, would give way for one of the barracks.
Adekeye also said that one of the housing schemes for officers had been completed in Lagos while beneficiaries would get their keys before the end of this year.
“ We have a vision of what the Navy should be and we have mapped out plans for improvement in our training, operations and welfare,’’ he said.
The CNS acknowledged that officers were working under some constraints but assured that “all will be well when our new programmes for improvement roll out.’’
