YENAGOA - The National Directorate of Employment (NDE), together with the Bayelsa Ministry of Agriculture, has begun the training of 120 persons as professional farmers.
The Bayelsa Coordinator of the NDE, Chief Napoleon Amachree, told newsmen in Yenagoa that the trainees were selected from the three senatorial districts of the state.
Amachree said 40 persons were selected from each district.
He said the programme would last for four months and entailed two weeks of theory, two weeks of practicals and three weeks of industrial attachment in various farms in the state.
Amachree said the training would enable them to acquire the necessary modern farming techniques.
The director explained that the benefits derivable from the training were numerous and
added that the trainees were expected to put the knowledge acquired into practice.
He also said that the training would enable them to be self-reliant instead of jostling for white collar jobs.
It was learnt that the potential professional farmers are currently undergoing training in cassava farming at Opolo in the state capital.
Amachree explained that the training was limited to cassava farming for now because of the rains and flood.
He said that the NDE would embark on the training of persons on plantain farming and food processing in the future.
