NAIROBI- Zimbabwean opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai said yesterday that he will not accept a power-sharing agreement with President Robert Mugabe, unless he gets the express mandate to head a new government.
Tsvangirai said his main demand was that the post of Prime Minister to be created must give him an exclusive mandate to govern.
“Our position is very simple, the Prime Minister will not only have the responsibility but must have the necessary authority to drive the government.
“We are not looking for sharing of positions, but sharing power,” Tsvangirai told reporters in Nairobi yesterday.
The Zimbabwean opposition leader arrived in Kenya to meet Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who had been in similar position months ago.
He said discussions on a power-sharing accord with the Mugabe ZANU-PF party were progressing well, but was still deadlocked on how executive power would be shared between the Prime Minister and the President.
The opposition leadership is also opposed to President Mugabe’s plans to convene Parliament on Tuesday, until the sharing of positions of the Speaker and the leadership of Parliament is determined.
